For an afternoon of classical music, come to the Music Hall as the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra presents 'American Landscapes.'
Join the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra this November and get your passport stamped for American Landscapes, the first stop on our 2009+2010 season and musical tour around the world (and beyond).
With Music Director Christopher Hill and Mihai Marica on cello, the performance begins with a celebration of American composers, starting in New York with Leonard Bernstein's Overture to Candide before moving to the midwest for 'the quintessential American symphony,' Roy Harris' Symphony No. 3 composed in 1939. From there we move to one of the most popular works of the 20th century classical repertoire by an American composer, Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings of 1936. The journey concludes with Antonín Dvorak's Cello Concerto featuring award-winning guest soloist Mihai Marica. While not an American composer by birth, Dvorak's music was greatly inspired by his time in this country, and his Cello Concerto of 1894-1895 was written in New York while he served as director of the National Conservatory.
