There’s a lot to do and see this weekend, including visual art, films, comedy, theater, music, and more. Here are some of the top highlights.
‘Creating in Isolation’ at The Art Center
The new exhibit at The Art Center in Dover features works that express feelings about “Creating in Isolation” during the Covid-19 pandemic. Curated by gallery director Rebecca Proctor, the show includes sculptures, paintings, prints, and mixed-media pieces by 25 artists, revealing a range of emotions. ‘Proof of Loss’ at the HollyShorts Film Festival
A short film with local roots premieres virtually on Friday at the HollyShorts Film Festival. “Proof of Loss,” starring Dylan and Colette McDermott, screens during a block of shorts from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The film, about a father and daughter reuniting after their home is destroyed by a California wildfire, was written by Laura Zak and produced by Graham Waleryszak (above), both of Exeter. ‘Proof’ at The Players’ Ring
In the next production at The Players’ Ring in Portsmouth, a local cast and crew performs a play that’s won a Tony Award and a Pulitzer Prize. David Auburn’s “Proof,” a psychological thriller about a brilliant mathematician struggling to untangle her father’s legacy, is on stage Nov. 13-22. Show times are Fridays at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m., and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $18-$24. For more information, click here.
Virtual Children’s Book Festival
Strawbery Banke Museum’s sixth annual Children’s Book Festival will take place virtually on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Presented in partnership with Portsmouth Public Library in celebration of National Children’s Book Week, the online event offers a dedicated landing page with links to the websites of local children’s authors, illustrators, story times, and more. Exeter Winter Farmers Market
Seacoast Eat Local’s first winter farmers market of the season takes place in the parking lot of Exeter High School on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A second market will take place one week later, on Nov. 21, at the Wentworth Greenhouses in Rollinsford. Although not mandatory, guests are advised to make advance appointments to this year’s markets to avoid waiting in line, as capacity will be limited. For more information, click here.
Seacoast Artisans Fine Arts & Crafts Show
The Seacoast Artisans’ 21st annual Fine Arts & Crafts Show moves to a new location this year. The event will be held at the Mall at Fox Run in Newington on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Local artisans will offer all kinds of handmade products, including soaps, woodworkings, jewelry, art, pottery, home decor, clothing, and accessories. Jake Brake Gypsies at The Stone Church
The Stone Church in Newmarket is continuing to host cozy outdoor concerts all month long. Coming up on Saturday is the Jake Brake Gypsies, who will play some Grateful Dead tunes from 5-8 p.m. The band’s lineup is filled with Dead specialists, including members of various tribute acts. Tickets are sold by the table; a table of four is $50 and a table of six is $65. Bundle up and enjoy the jams in the open air. For more information, click here.
Lady Lamb at The Word Barn Meadow
Just when it seemed The Word Barn Meadow had closed up for the winter, the outdoor venue in Exeter announced one last act — and it’s a doozy. Portsmouth-born singer-songwriter Aly Spaltro (aka Lady Lamb) will take the stage for two concerts on Saturday. The 2 p.m. show is sold out, but a handful of tickets remain for the second set from 5-6:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 (and don’t forget to order your Ohana Kitchen poke bowl). Learn more here.
Patty Larkin at The Music Hall
Boston-based singer-songwriter and guitarist Patty Larkin, a pioneer of “folk-urban pop music” and a founding member of The Four Bitchin’ Babes, will perform a socially-distanced concert at The Music Hall in Portsmouth on Saturday from 8-10 p.m. On her latest album, “Bird in a Cage,” released earlier this year, Larkin turns poems by celebrated writers into songs. Bob Marley at the Rochester Opera House
Maine’s favorite comedian, Bob Marley, is doing a spate of socially-distanced shows at the Rochester Opera House. Following a sold-out run at the same venue in September, he’s returning for a total of eight performances between Nov. 12-15, featuring new and different material. Most of those dates are already sold out, but there are still some tickets available for two shows on Sunday at 5 and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $37.50. Learn more here.
