The Black Heritage Trail of NH proudly announces the debut of rising artist Nadroj Nina Holmes in his first-ever showcase in New Hampshire. The opening reception of this exhibit, scheduled for Friday, June 7th at 5:00 PM, will be a part of Portsmouth’s June Art ‘Round Town. It promises to be an immersive exploration into the living history of Black liberation movements through the lens of contemporary art.
Holmes’ work transcends conventional boundaries, offering a profound journey into the cultural and folkloric expressions of Black liberation. His pieces resonate with the amalgamation of past and future, facts and imaginings, trauma and transformation. With a keen eye for detail and a deep commitment to social commentary, Holmes invites viewers to confront and engage with the complexities of America’s history and its enduring implications.
The centerpiece of the exhibit is a groundbreaking reimagining of the historical figure, known only as “Gordon”, whose scars bore witness to the brutality of chattel slavery. In a departure from traditional representations, Holmes presents Gordon in a new light, challenging viewers to reconsider prevailing narratives and delve into the nuances of contemporary discourse.
The interactive installation “Delusions & Context” invites attendees to immerse themselves in a dialogue between past and present, shaping future discourse on issues of race, identity, and liberation. Each individual image serves as a catalyst for reflection, encouraging viewers to question entrenched beliefs and embrace new perspectives.
A graduate of the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Holmes brings a wealth of academic insight to his artistic practice, supplemented by a minor in Africana Studies from Simmons and Wheelock Colleges. His work is a testament to the power of research and critical inquiry, offering a platform for marginalized voices to be heard and amplified.
The opening reception and exhibit will be held at BHTNH Headquarters at 222 Court St in Portsmouth. The event is free and open to the public starting at 5:00 PM followed by an Artist Talk at 5:30 PM. For more information, visit www.blackheritagetrailnh.org or call 603-570-8469.
