History of Creek Farm

Creek Farm
400 Little Harbor Road
Portsmouth, NH 03801 United States

Did you know that the Little Harbor Chapel and Carey Cottage were built by the same family? Join us for a wonderful partner program with Little Harbor Chapel. After the Summer Sunday Service at the Chapel (11:00 – 12:00), please join us at The Forest Society Education Center at Creek Farm and take a step back in time for a PowerPoint presentation on the most recent history of Creek Farm. Following the presentation, bring a picnic lunch and take a walk along our Little Harbor Loop Trail, enjoying the natural beauty of Creek Farm’s mix of indigenous and imported flora and fauna, Sagamore Creek, and more.

Arthur Astor Carey and his wife Agnes built Carey Cottage at Creek Farm starting in 1887-1888, on the portion of their land that bordered the tidal Sagamore Creek. Carey later went on to have the Little Harbor Chapel built in 1902 as an Un-Denominational space for spirituality.

Guided by the will of Carey, the Little Harbor Chapel sanctuary seeks to inspire visitors to foster and nurture their own spiritual practice through access to the sacred setting of the historic Chapel and the unsurpassed serenity of the surrounding woods. Following Carey’s philosophy of unity, respect for others, and his deep love of the Little Harbor woods, the Chapel strives to ensure that the land it stewards remains undeveloped and a safe home for the native flora and fauna that inhabit it.

“The Forest Society shares in this philosophy and are very proud to protect Creek Farm and Carey Cottage,” states Sarah Kern, Creek Farm education program coordinator for the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests. “We are so pleased to welcome our community to the 35-acre property and to enjoy the Little Harbor Loop Trail, which begins at Creek Farm and passes through city and state conservation land, taking walkers on a tour through the woods, inter-tidal zones and meadows of Carey’s historic seacoast retreat.”

BRING: We will be indoors, so just bring your happy selves. If planning on walking, bring water, snacks and appropriate footwear and clothing.
