Southwestern bohemian style originates in New Mexico and Arizona. With a higher population of Native American tribes in the region, there is a rich, artistic history to draw from. It is a relaxed style using bold, colorful patterns on big coats and sweaters, lots of layered jewelry, fringe and faux fur trim, and leather boots and moccasins. The look inspires a warmer weather feel that New Englanders can enjoy in the summertime, and the fashion can be found on the Seacoast at many local boutique shops.
Hair and Makeup
This look by VANITY HAIR AND MAKEUP STUDIO is inspired by free spiritedness and the desert landscape. For effortlessly wavy hair, Vanity’s Allie Sites started with a dry shampoo spray for texture, then curled the hair for extra volume, and finally went over it with a barrel waver.
For makeup, Vanity’s Cody Myers enhanced the natural look with a light airbrushed foundation and contouring. He brought in some shimmer with the blush and a light brown eyeshadow with a defining crease. A pale, dusty rose lip is just a couple of shades darker than the natural color. He set the makeup with a light misting spray.
Jewelry
SOUTHWEST PASSAGE is the local spot to find authentic Native American jewelry. As the name suggests, walking into the store is like being transported to New Mexico. Along with the cases of jewelry, there’s also pottery, artifacts, and animal bones on display. The bright turquoise mineral is very meaningful to some tribes, and often set against shiny sterling silver.
Clothing and Accessories
Affordable vintage bohemian style is easily found at WEAR HOUSE, a consignment shop in downtown Portsmouth. We pulled a fabulous suede jacket, moccasin-style booties, sun-shading hats, and a Pendleton wool purse. For warmer weather, we paired these with a white tank with fringe and patterned skirt from nearby SUMMER SESSIONS.
